Evalution

Evaluation

For our FMP we looked at the Reverb, which had been done previously and have planned to improve, as the previous one was not very good. For the pre production of our documentary we had the schedule for our group and the Reverb group as this would with the filming of Reverb.
My job role in the Reverb documentary was production assistant , my job role within my group was to write down notes as important things would be mentioned to the group ,for example unit changes, in case one unit was filming at the civic hall ,while the other would be filming at the college.
Also I would help the technical assistant Matthew Olorenshaw and the camera operator Richard Alder, as I would get some good film shots; this would include the shots of the venue. I had to check that Rich followed the shot list as we needed as variety of cutaways for our documentary, as we had a lot of interview footage and had to make sure that the documentary had a narrative structure and made sure the documentary would follow the narrative structure as we were showing the pre production of Reverb . The narrative structure of our documentary was telling a story of how Reverb would be made. The style of our documentary was ‘fly on the wall’ as we are going behind the scenes of Reverb, as we were showing it how it would be made and the final product showed in our documentary would showed the aftermath of the Reverb event at the Civic Hall.

http://www.stratcast.studio22wm.co.uk/reverb/index.html

These links to Stratcast show information on Reverb, as this was what our documentary was about and was showing the making of the Reverb, as we were seeing how the documentary was being made.
Research techniques for the media industries
I had used research techniques very well as I was researching the cost of media equipment to do for the hypothetical budget, I used for the presentation and used secondary research. I used secondary research as it can provide a lot of information. It is important to know what the audience and the market as our documentary, as the audience for our documentary would be students aged between 16 and 25,as the Reverb show would be broadcasted on Stratcast. It is important to be aware of copyright ,when using found material as if you used copyright music in the documentary, you would be sued for copyright infringement and would have to use you own sources, this could include your own music, from the local bands.
Production Management project
I had looked at the previous documentary of Reverb, which was not good as there were a lot of problems, which included the camera operator filming in a bad position as he was in the way. The planning of the production was very successful as I would know the place of the meeting and write down the meeting minutes as I was the production assistant and there were a few problems as there were arguments between people over how they would film a shot and how they rig for the interviews.
My job role for the documentary was the production assistant and I would write up what was going to be said in the meetings .Meeting minutes would be important as they would help the group as they provide the information needed as they would tell the group what things were being discussed.
My job role within the team was simple as I had to make sure everything went to plan and listen to what was being said at meetings, as important information was being mentioned My performance within the production was outstanding as I helped the director and the producer, I would follow orders, this included doing research for my presentation, which was looking at the hypothetical budget. I learnt from job role that I have done for a couple of months is that a lot of hard work would be involved, as this had included the storyboards and what establishing shots would be needed.
Preproduction was very important for our documentary, as it was important to keep things up to date and show the planning involved, this could include risk assessments and group schedules and initial plan, these would be very important as they would feature what the group needed to do for the day and the initial plan is the layout of the documentary as this would be very important and would show what would be featured in the documentary.
I had found being a production assistant, quite stressful because I had many jobs to do at the same time, and colleagues who all wanted their requests dealt with first. I tried to handle the pressure by being organised and always bringing a pen and notepad to meetings as it is very important to know what is being said in the meetings. I was constantly checking my emails as it was important to check when we would have a group meeting. All the time I was looking to improve my performance by, for example, trying to keep all members of the team fully informed of any problems or new developments which had occurred. I did this by communicating with people in a variety of different ways, including texts, emails and social networking, as well as talking people face to face. Communicating is very important as you
Factual Production Techniques
The contractual issues that are relating to the factual production for television, can include the exploitation rights and the production finance, this could include the cost of using crew and media equipment, such as a Sony HD camera. Other contractual issues can include the exploitation of anyone aged under 18 years old and would need to sign a release form. You can’t put any advertising as this would be sublimal advertising. The regulatory issues for factual programmes are the regulations of Ofcom, this can include privacy issues and advertising issues.
The codes and conventions of professional documentaries can include the use of voiceover as this can explain things shown; an example of this is Planet Earth, which is narrated by David Atternbough. Another convention of a television documentary is the use of music as it can be used to show emotions in the documentary.

Monday 10th May –Friday 14th May

Monday 10th May
Rich tested the camera as we were going to do behind the scenes footage with the camera operators for Reverb. I was also a cable basher as I had help move the camera around. Also some of the group had filmed the production meetings. We also interviewed the camera crew who were Seb Shaw, Matt Tomas and Jon Burgress.

Tuesday 11th May
One of the lecturers had checked our footage and had to give us feedback on what would need improving. Phil had given us feedback on what we needed to improve on including the camera shots. Had a group meeting in the ALS room to discuss what separate units we would go in for filming, I wrote down the meeting in minutes of what was being discussed as I am the Production assistant, and learnt the two separate units we would be in, I would be in a group with Matt and Rich, while James and Dan were in another group. Earlier Phil had given the group feedback .Also wrote down interview questions.

Wednesday 12th May
I typed the interviews questions that I wrote down yesterday and showed them to the rest of my group with other questions I should put in. Then I re typed the questions, which James would ask the HNDs and the lecturers involved in the Reverb documentary

Thursday 13th May
We set up interviews in the television studio, which would include the use of the Redhead lights and the studio camera as this would show the expertise involved.
We interviewed the series editor Dave Reid and the executive producer Sophy Blount as they play a big role in the production of Reverb. Apart from interviewing Sophy and Dave, James interviewed Matt Tomas and Tom Millard .These interviews were set up differently as the cameras and Redhead lights were set up in the television studio, which had made it look professional.

Friday 14th May
Today we did more interviews for our documentary; we interviewed the main presenter Wayne Bartlett and the sound operator Samuel Luke Molloy. Later that day I labelled the tapes for Matt, who is the offline editor. Also I typed up the cutaways that were needed for our documentary, and mentioned things to include such as establishing shots of the location and the job roles for HNDs.

Monday 3rd May-Friday 7th May

Monday 3rd May
We had a group meeting with what we needed to do for the pitch, this included the updated hypothetical budget and other people like Rich agreed to research Ofcom. I had emailed Matt and James the updated hypothetical budget.

Tuesday 4th May
Before we did our pitch, we had decided who would discuss each section .Today we did our pitch and got our documentary recommissioned. This was good as we had included secondary research and primary research.

Thursday 6th May
Today the group filmed interviews in the television gallery, the people that were interviewed were Sophy Blount and Dave Reid and Paul Stringer. We needed to use the interviews in our documentary as it would look professional

Friday 7th May
John Branney reminded us the importance of production folders, and what things would be included such as treatments and risk assessments

Monday 26th April –Friday 30th April

Monday 26th April
I had emailed James the notes for my finance report which I had done for the PowerPoint presentation. Then James handed out presentation notes and then the group decided which person would say what. Also went to Coxes Yard to the Reverb pre gig as we were filming footage for our documentary, this was going to include behind the scenes footage.

Tuesday 27th April
Today my group did the pitch and had got feedback on what we needed to be improved; this had included the research, mainly the questionnaires. I needed to improve on my hypothetic budget by featuring the cost of audio mixers and red heads lighting.

Thursday 29th April
In John’s lesson I learned the importance of what things would be featured in our presentation for next week, this included featuring primary and secondary research, and this can include a textual analysis of a documentary and focus groups. Also needed to research more stuff for the pitch and need to mention the problems that we will face making our Reverb documentary.

Friday 30th April
Did some research for hypothetical budget and updated it on Microsoft Excel. I emailed Matt a profile picture for business card and the Switch Productions website.

19th -23rd April

Monday 19th April
In my FMP group, I practiced laying out meeting minutes, which is a word template used on Microsoft word and where can you put what you have discussed in your groups. The people in my FMP group were Richard Alder, Greg Clarke, Dan Schroeder and James Blackburn. We selected our job roles, including camera operator and sound assistant. Also we were told what we need to do for our presentation next week. Also the group shared contact details as this would be important in case anyone was absent from group meetings. I was asked to do research on the RSC, also we selected a group name for our production which was switch productions and Dan was designing the website for it on Adobe Dreamweaver.

Tuesday 20th April
How we would get the behind the scenes access of the RSC in Stratford and we would get a behind the scenes access. Then there was plan b in case we couldn’t do the RSC documentary, which was Reverb, as it could be easily done in time. The name of this documentary would be Reverb off the record, as we going behind the scenes of Reverb. In Johns’ lesson learnt about the importance of narrative for documentaries. The narrative would include exposition, complication, development, climax and resolution. Exposition introduces characters and settings. Complication disrupts the equilibrium. In the development we can learn more the characters featured in the documentary and the resolution is the return to a state of normality. The narrative structure of our Reverb documentary, the exposition of the documentary would be the bands as they are unsigned. The complication for Reverb off the record would be the technical difficulties; this could include the communication problems with the equipment and producer s talk to the key crew. We need to arrange a meeting with the HNDs. People were also assigned by James on what research they needed to do for the presentation on Monday. I was to research Reverb on Stratcast and PRS.

Thursday 22nd April
Today in John’s lesson we looked at different types of documentary including expository and observatory. An expository documentary exposes the truth about something, this includes Supersize Me as this exposes the truth about MacDonald’s food and fat content. In an expository documentary both the presenter and voiceover are the same person.
An observatory documentary observes life in close up and often has a voiceover. An example of this can be Planet Earth, which is narrated by David Attenborough, who describes the observational things the viewer can see.
Another different type of documentary is ‘Fly on the wall’, this captures on film the reality of life, an example would be The Family, and this looks at a daily life of a family.

Another different type of documentary is ‘Reflective’ is Werner Herzog’s film Grizzly Man , this reflects on the life of Timothy Treadwell who had spent most of his time in Alaska with grizzly bears without realising the dangers he was in and getting killed for his stupidity.

Another type of documentary is interactive which allows the audience to make their own choice about what they see; an example of an interactive documentary is Oxfam’s online interactive documentary that showed the damage of cyclone Aila, as it affected the community in Gabura, Bangladesh. The audience had the choice to see where they could go and what to see though the medium of the internet.

There are also two types of audience that view documentaries, this can include subjective and objective. Subjective is when the audience are taking and agreeing with the point of the presenter because they have a pre-formed acknowledged view.
Objective is when the audiences have no view and will make their decision about their view from watching the documentary, but may not agree with the view or the subject.

While looking at different types of documentary, we analysed different types of documentary including Supersize me and Touching the Void. Later that day James has asked me to do some research on the hypothetic budget, which would show the importance of cost for crew. Matt Olorenoshaw gave me a detailed sheet of costs of Sony cameras and audio mixers to give an idea of the outline for the hypothetical budget.

Friday 23rd April
Continued my research on the hypothetical budget and looked at various camera rental sites and made my budget in Microsoft excel. Then it was emailed to James as it would be put on the Microsoft PowerPoint for a presentation.
